ATS Security Advisory: Critical PHP Security Vulnerabilities (PHP2Shell)
Featured Security Advisory | October 23, 2026
Algoma Technology Services (ATS) is actively investigating two recently disclosed critical security vulnerabilities affecting PHP, identified as CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, collectively known as PHP2Shell.
PHP is widely used to support websites and web applications, but it is also embedded in commercial software, network appliances, and web-based management interfaces. These vulnerabilities affect the underlying PHP runtime and, if successfully exploited, could allow an unauthenticated attacker to remotely execute malicious code on an affected system.
Security updates have been released for supported PHP versions. Technology vendors are also continuing to assess their products and provide updates or guidance where necessary.
ATS is actively reviewing the environments we manage to identify potential exposure and coordinate the appropriate security response.
What Do These Vulnerabilities Mean for Organizations?
Because PHP operates behind the scenes of many technology platforms, organizations may depend on affected software without being directly aware of it.
Potential exposure extends beyond traditional websites to systems and applications that incorporate PHP as part of their underlying technology.
The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security has issued an alert recommending that organizations identify affected systems, prioritize internet-facing services, and apply available security updates promptly.
Although these vulnerabilities are considered critical, the presence of an affected PHP version does not automatically mean a system has been compromised. It does, however, require appropriate assessment and remediation.
What ATS Is Doing
ATS is proactively reviewing the systems and infrastructure under our management to assess potential exposure and address identified risks.
Our response includes:
Identifying potentially affected systems: Reviewing managed servers and applications that use PHP, including their versions and configurations.
Assessing third-party technology: Evaluating network appliances and other managed products that may contain embedded PHP components.
Monitoring vendor advisories: Tracking manufacturer security guidance, affected product announcements, and available software or firmware updates.
Prioritizing exposed systems: Giving particular attention to systems and applications accessible from the internet.
Coordinating security updates: Applying or coordinating appropriate remediation where affected systems are identified.
Because PHP can be incorporated into third-party products, a complete assessment requires both direct technical review and ongoing coordination with technology vendors.
Our priority is to identify potential exposure, address affected systems, and maintain appropriate oversight as the situation develops.
Is Any Action Required From ATS Clients?
There is no action required from ATS clients at this time.
Our team is actively reviewing the technology environments we manage and monitoring relevant security advisories.
If we identify an affected system that requires client involvement, additional information, or coordination, ATS will contact the affected client directly to discuss the appropriate next steps.
Clients do not need to independently initiate changes to ATS-managed systems in response to this advisory.
Final Thoughts
The PHP2Shell vulnerabilities highlight the importance of continuous cybersecurity oversight, timely security updates, and vendor coordination.
ATS remains focused on identifying potential risks, taking appropriate action, and keeping clients informed as the situation evolves.
Strong cybersecurity means staying informed, prepared, and ready to respond when new threats emerge.
